Indian Railways enforces strict rules on seat changes and ticket transfers

Indian Railways has clarified regulations regarding seat exchanges and ticket usage to prevent passenger disputes and unauthorized travel. Passengers are advised that moving to a different reserved seat or coach without official permission can result in heavy fines. While travelers often swap seats to sit with family or friends, the rules dictate that any change to an allotted seat should be managed by the Traveling Ticket Examiner (TTE), who has the authority to reassign vacant berths.

Additional regulations prohibit the sale or unauthorized transfer of confirmed railway tickets to other individuals, an offense that can lead to both monetary penalties and imprisonment. Furthermore, passengers traveling on unconfirmed waiting list tickets after the chart has been prepared may face penalties and be required to pay additional fares.
