Indian Railways launches water safety and hygiene drive

Indian Railways has initiated a specialized cleanliness and disinfection drive across its network to improve the safety and hygiene of drinking water facilities for passengers. Zonal Railways are tasked with inspecting the entire supply chain, including water sources, treatment plants, filtration systems, and storage tanks.

The initiative emphasizes preventive maintenance and regular quality monitoring. Key actions include draining, scrubbing, and disinfecting water tanks, as well as repairing damaged pipelines and filters to prevent contamination. Authorities will also inspect tank covers and vents to protect against algae and animals, and ensure no cross-connections exist between potable and non-potable water systems.

Additional focus will be placed on water coolers, UV and RO purification systems, and Water Vending Machines. The Railway Board has directed comprehensive inspections to ensure these systems are properly serviced and functioning. Furthermore, facilities relying on hand pumps and borewells will undergo verification to ensure water remains safe for consumption through physical, chemical, and bacteriological testing.
