Indian Railways operates first long-haul double-stack container train
Indian Railways has successfully operated its first long-haul double-stack container train on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor. The train departed from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) near Mumbai on August 21 and traveled approximately 422 kilometers to reach the CONCOR GCT terminal in Varnama, Vadodara division.
The operation utilized two coupled double-stack rakes to transport a total of 360 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units). The leading rake, hauled by locomotive 60311, weighed 1,817 tonnes, while the trailing rake, hauled by locomotive 24690, weighed 2,105 tonnes.
This milestone is expected to enhance rail freight capacity and operational efficiency by allowing larger cargo volumes to be moved in a single trip. Key benefits include reduced terminal congestion, faster container evacuation from ports, and lower transit times. Additionally, the use of electric locomotives for high-volume transport aims to reduce reliance on diesel-powered road transport, thereby lowering carbon emissions and road congestion.
