Indian Railways reports 6.14% growth in freight loading for September 2026

Indian Railways reported a 6.14 per cent increase in freight loading for September 2026, handling 135.35 million tonnes compared to 127.52 million tonnes in the same month the previous year. This growth was driven by several key commodity sectors, including food grains, which saw a 25 per cent increase, clinker at 20 per cent, and coal at 9 per cent. Consequently, freight revenue rose by ₹1,266 crores, representing a 9.3 per cent year-on-year growth.

On a regional level, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) unloaded 1,094 freight rakes during September 2026. Assam recorded the highest volume with 585 unloaded rakes, followed by West Bengal with 208 and Bihar with 145. Other states in the NFR zone, including Tripura, Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram, also facilitated the movement of essential goods such as fertilizers, sugar, and salt to support regional supply chains.
