Indian Railways: Rules for missed trains and booking vacant seats

Indian Railways provides specific protocols for passengers who miss their scheduled trains or fail to secure tickets through the Tatkal quota. Under current rules, a reservation is tied to a specific journey and cannot be used to board a different service without risking penalties or being treated as traveling without a valid ticket.

Passengers who miss their train may still have limited options. A Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) can be filed to claim refunds under certain conditions, such as when a train is delayed by more than three hours. Additionally, a Traveling Ticket Examiner (TTE) does not always immediately release a berth, potentially allowing passengers to catch the train at a subsequent station.

For those unable to secure tickets via Tatkal, the IRCTC offers a ‘Current Booking’ facility. This allows passengers to book confirmed, vacant seats after the reservation chart has been prepared. This option is available through the IRCTC website or app under the ‘Charts Vacant’ service and does not require the additional surcharges associated with Tatkal bookings.
