Indian researchers develop experimental “smart” cancer drug RK-251

Researchers in India have developed an experimental “smart” cancer drug, RK-251, designed to target cancer cells while minimizing damage to healthy tissue. The drug is a site-activated prodrug that remains largely inactive until it encounters high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), a chemical environment commonly found within tumors.

Once activated by ROS, RK-251 releases NBDHEX, a compound that interferes with proteins essential for cancer cell survival. In preclinical laboratory studies, the drug showed promising activity against aggressive triple-negative breast cancer cells. Additionally, testing in zebrafish embryos indicated no obvious signs of toxicity under the studied conditions.

The research was a collaborative effort led by the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST) and the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. While the results are encouraging, RK-251 is currently in the preclinical stage and has not yet been tested in humans. Further extensive testing is required to determine its safety, effectiveness, and behavior within the human body.
