Indian rupee edges up to 95.17 per US dollar
The Indian rupee closed on Friday at 95.17 per US dollar, a modest gain of five paise from the previous close of 95.22. Trading saw the rupee move within a 95.16‑95.28 band before settling at the higher level. Analysts linked the slight appreciation to foreign capital inflows despite lingering uncertainty over the Iran‑Oman negotiations on the Hormuz Strait, which could keep the rupee vulnerable to further swings. Market participants also watched US non‑farm payroll data for additional direction.
The dollar index slipped 0.02% to 99.90, while Brent crude futures fell 0.23% to $82.30 a barrel. In domestic equity markets, the Sensex dropped 455.59 points to 78,499.17 and the Nifty fell 65.35 points to 24,570.65. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net buyers, acquiring roughly ₹480.24 crore of Indian shares on the day, offset by a modest net sell of ₹17.86 crore reported in a related update.
