Middle East conflict drives currency volatility in Iran and India

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and fluctuating energy markets are driving significant economic instability across Asia. In Iran, the rial has plummeted to a record low, with traders in Tehran exchanging over 2.5 million rials for one US dollar. This currency collapse is compounded by an annual inflation rate exceeding 60 percent and rising food prices. Despite the volatility, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi indicated that indirect negotiations with the United States regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz have entered a “more serious” phase.

In India, the rupee has breached the 96 per US dollar threshold, pressured by high Brent crude oil prices and rising US Treasury yields. Economists warn that the combination of a weaker currency and expensive energy imports could exacerbate inflation and impact household consumption. Meanwhile, Nomura projects the Reserve Bank of India may raise interest rates to a terminal repo rate of 5.75 percent by the end of the year to manage inflation.

Pakistan is also facing fiscal challenges, with the government reporting an estimated Rs144 billion loss in tax revenue during the first quarter. This loss is attributed to the US-Iran conflict and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, which have increased fuel costs and dampened economic activity. Additionally, the Federal Board of Revenue has announced increased penalties for taxpayers who fail to meet the September 30 income tax filing deadline.
