Indian scientists develop smart cancer drug RK-251

Indian researchers have developed an experimental ‘smart’ cancer drug candidate, RK-251, designed to target tumor cells with higher precision while minimizing damage to healthy tissue. The research was led by Dr. Asis Bala of the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST) in collaboration with Dr. K. P. Bhabak of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati.

The drug utilizes the elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) typically found in cancer cells as a trigger. RK-251 remains relatively inactive in normal conditions but activates upon encountering high ROS levels within a tumor, releasing the anticancer compound NBDHEX. This compound targets specific proteins that facilitate cancer cell survival and treatment resistance.

In preclinical laboratory studies, RK-251 demonstrated promising activity against aggressive triple-negative breast cancer cells and showed lower toxicity in healthy cells and zebrafish embryos. While these results are encouraging, the drug remains in the preclinical stage. Further studies are required to establish its safety, effective dosage, and efficacy in humans before clinical trials can begin.
