Indian smallcap stocks face sharp weekly decline

Smallcap stocks in India experienced their worst weekly decline since February 2025, with the sector falling 7%. Analysts attribute the correction to valuation concerns, the unwinding of leveraged positions, surging crude prices, and weak global cues.

Specific companies saw significant losses, including Himadri Speciality Chemical Ltd, which fell 25.24%, and Jindal Saw, which dropped 22.80%. Other notable decliners included Finolex Cables, Shipping Corporation of India, and CreditAccess Grameen. Technical indicators suggest widespread weakness, as only 16% of Smallcap 250 stocks were trading above their 50-day moving averages.

Historical data indicates that high volatility is characteristic of the smallcap segment. Between 2004 and 2025, the Nifty Smallcap 100 index remained more than 30% below its previous peak for 36% of trading days. Such declines are more frequent in smallcaps compared to midcap or large-cap indices, often requiring years to recover to previous highs.
