Indian states advance AI integration in higher education

Indian regional leaders are pushing for the integration of artificial intelligence into higher education to prepare graduates for a changing economy. In Punjab, Governor Gulab Chand Kataria urged universities to adopt AI as a multidisciplinary tool, suggesting its application extend beyond computer science into fields such as medicine, agriculture, law, and social sciences. He emphasized that AI adoption must remain ethical, inclusive, and socially responsible.

In Uttar Pradesh, the state government is drafting a policy to ensure the safe and effective use of AI within its universities. An AI Policy Advisory Committee, established by Governor Anandiben Patel, is tasked with creating a framework for new technologies and future strategies, with a draft expected in approximately three months.

Efforts in Uttar Pradesh are also focusing on AI readiness in rural areas. Professor Vinay Kumar Pathak of Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University noted that training will focus on developing AI-based solutions for local needs, specifically targeting tools to assist farmers, laborers, and underprivileged populations.
