India's equity indices dip as crude oil prices rise and financial stocks fall

On Friday Indian benchmark indices fell sharply, with the Sensex losing 455.59 points to close at 78,499.17 and the Nifty dropping 65.35 points to 24,570.65. The decline was driven by a rise in Brent crude, which traded around $83.45 per barrel – up about 1.1% – amid renewed geopolitical tension over the Strait of Hormuz. Weakness in financial stocks added further pressure; Bajaj Finance fell roughly 5.9% and Bajaj Finserv slipped more than 3%, while ICICI Bank and other lenders also declined. Foreign Institutional Investors sold equities worth ₹17.86 crore on Thursday, reinforcing the sell‑off. Despite the intraday fall, the market posted weekly gains: the Nifty rose 0.77% for the week to end at 24,570 and the Sensex was up 0.52% on the week. Small‑ and mid‑cap indices outperformed the benchmarks, and the new F&O Closing Auction Session, introduced on Monday, helped stabilise price discovery after an initially volatile start. Global cues such as softer US labour‑market data and expectations of a delayed Fed rate hike also supported the broader market backdrop.
