Indian stock markets face heavy selling pressure amid global volatility

Indian equity benchmarks have faced significant downward pressure, with the Sensex and Nifty 50 experiencing multiple sessions of decline. This volatility is characterized by a corrective trend that has led to the longest consecutive weekly decline in 25 years. On October 1, the Sensex saw a sharp drop of over 950 points, while the Nifty 50 fell nearly 320 points.

Several external factors are driving the market sell-off. Key contributors include elevated crude oil prices, with Brent crude reaching levels around USD 100-103 per barrel, and rising US Treasury bond yields. Additionally, persistent selling by Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) has heavily weighed on sentiment. On September 29, FIIs offloaded shares worth Rs 9,980.22 crore, while on October 1, outflows exceeded Rs 10,000 crore.

Sectoral performance has been mixed but largely negative, with the Nifty Auto, Healthcare, Pharma, and Metal indices among the biggest laggards. Conversely, some banking and IT stocks have shown resilience or gains in specific sessions. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) have provided some support through buying activity, though not enough to offset the substantial foreign outflows.
