Reserve Bank of India raises repo rate to 5.50%

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has raised its repo rate by 25 basis points, increasing it from 5.25% to 5.50%. This marks the first rate hike since February 2023. Following the decision, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) shifted its policy stance from 'neutral' to 'calibrated tightening', signaling that further increases remain possible to combat inflation risks.

In its economic outlook, the RBI raised its GDP growth forecast for FY 2026-27 to 7.1% from 6.7%. Conversely, the retail inflation (CPI) forecast for the same period was increased to 5.2% from 5.0%. Governor Sanjay Malhotra noted that the Indian Rupee may be undervalued, citing various metrics including the Real Effective Exchange Rate (REER).

The policy announcement has impacted financial markets. Indian benchmark indices, including the BSE Sensex and Nifty 50, experienced significant volatility and downward pressure following the news. The rate hike is expected to increase borrowing costs for consumers, potentially leading to higher EMIs for home, auto, and personal loans.
