Indian stock markets face volatility amid shifting oil and bond yields

Indian equity markets experienced significant volatility throughout late September 2026, driven by fluctuating crude oil prices, global bond yields, and geopolitical tensions in West Asia. While some sessions saw benchmark indices like the Sensex and Nifty 50 rebound due to softer oil prices and strong domestic growth signals, other sessions faced sharp declines. Specifically, rising US Treasury yields and concerns over foreign institutional investor (FII) selling pressured technology and financial stocks.

In a related economic development, RBI Deputy Governor Poonam Gupta stated there is a case for the Indian rupee to stabilize or appreciate. She cited a shrinking current account deficit (CAD) and strong structural strengths in net services exports and remittances as key factors for long-term resilience. Despite temporary shocks from oil and gold prices, Gupta noted that India's CAD remains well within prudent limits for emerging markets.
