Indian Super League transitions to club-led commercial model

The Indian Super League (ISL) is entering its 2026-27 season with a significant structural shift toward a club-led commercial model. Under this new arrangement, clubs have gained greater responsibility for commercial and financial growth, while the All India Football Federation (AIFF) retains regulatory oversight. Players, including Sporting Club Delhi midfielder Lalrinliana Hnamte, have noted that this model could drive increased investment and interest in the league.

The upcoming season features 13 teams and returns to a traditional home-and-away format with playoffs. The campaign will consist of 163 matches spanning eight months. Notably, Diamond Harbour FC was excluded from the competition after failing to meet administrative fee requirements.

In preparation for the season, several clubs have made key announcements. Punjab FC revealed a 27-member squad featuring ten academy graduates and five foreign players. Mumbai City FC has extended its partnership with Matix as an Associate Partner, and Chennaiyin FC has renewed its long-standing association with SSVM Institutions for a seventh consecutive year.
