Indiana connections to the Titanic tragedy

The history of the RMS Titanic includes notable connections to Indiana, specifically regarding passengers involved in the 1912 tragedy. One such individual was Ellen Mary Toomey, an Irish-born housekeeper residing in Indianapolis.

Toomey was traveling as a second-class passenger when the ship struck an iceberg. She survived the sinking by escaping on Lifeboat 9, which she noted was carrying only about 30 people despite having a higher capacity.

The Titanic wreck was located on September 1, 1985, by a joint American-French expedition nearly 12,500 feet below the ocean surface, ending a 73-year search for the vessel.
