Indiana data center landscape shifts amid moratoriums and major investments
Indiana is experiencing a complex period of data center expansion and regulation. In Indianapolis, the Metropolitan Development Commission voted unanimously to extend a moratorium on new data center construction through 2027. This pause aims to allow officials to establish stricter community standards regarding noise, water usage, and utility impacts.
Despite the moratorium in Indianapolis, development continues in other parts of the state. In Jeffersonville, a 700,000-square-foot Meta data center, part of an $800 million investment announced in early 2024, is nearing completion at the River Ridge Commerce Center. Officials expect the facility to be fully operational by the end of next year.
Additionally, Sabey Data Centers has outlined plans for a massive 130-acre campus in Decatur Township. The proposed project involves a projected $4.25 billion in taxable capital investment and is expected to create 75 full-time positions with average annual wages of at least $104,000. Construction is slated to begin in the second quarter of 2027.
