Indiana faces road funding concerns and utility rate disputes

Indiana is facing fiscal and regulatory challenges regarding infrastructure and utility costs. The state’s ongoing gas tax holiday, which has lasted five months and cost approximately $500 million, has raised concerns among transportation industry groups. The Build Indiana Council warns of a “funding cliff,” noting that maintaining state and local roads requires over $2 billion annually. While Governor Mike Braun has utilized a state surplus to fund the holiday, industry representatives argue that the state must diversify revenue sources as fuel efficiency reduces traditional tax intake.

Simultaneously, a controversial $71 million electricity rate hike for AES Indiana has been stalled. The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission pulled a planned rehearing vote after Governor Braun fired former commissioner Andy Zay. The dismissal followed allegations of financial disclosure failures and administrative misconduct, though Braun also cited a need for better utility affordability. The commission currently lacks consensus on the rate increase, and regulators have until September 8 to rule on the rehearing request.
