WNBA playoffs: Aces and Valkyries advance to semifinals
The WNBA playoffs are underway with major results from the first round. The defending champion Las Vegas Aces eliminated the Indiana Fever in a three-game series. A’ja Wilson dominated the series, notably scoring 36 points in the decisive 94-83 Game 3 victory. Following the elimination, Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark announced she will skip the LPGA Pro-Am to recover from an intense basketball schedule, and she is scheduled to appear as a guest picker for ESPN’s College GameDay in Iowa City.
In another first-round matchup, the Golden State Valkyries secured the first playoff series win in franchise history by defeating the Dallas Wings 77-73 in Game 3. Despite trailing by 16 points during the game, the Valkyries completed a second-half comeback led by Gabby Williams, who scored 19 points. The Valkyries will now advance to a best-of-five semifinal series against the Las Vegas Aces.
Off-court, Indiana Fever GM Amber Cox stated that player Sophie Cunningham’s recent controversial comments regarding trans athletes will have ‘no bearing’ on the team’s offseason decisions regarding her free agency.
