Indiana Governor Mike Braun Extends Gas Tax Holiday Amid Global Fuel Disruptions

Governor Mike Braun declared a new statewide energy emergency, reinstating the suspension of Indiana’s gasoline usage and excise taxes through September 5. The move extends the state’s gas‑tax holiday, which had already lowered pump prices for Hoosier families.

Braun cited recent disruptions to global oil supplies, including maritime drone battles in the Black Sea/Kerch Strait linked to the Russia‑Ukraine conflict and Canadian wildfires affecting the Alberta oil sands. He said the emergency gives the administration authority to keep fuel affordable while using the state’s reserve balance—over $5 billion—to fund road and bridge projects normally financed by the gas tax.

In a separate interview, Braun discussed the possibility of permanently eliminating the gas tax, noted recent leadership changes in Indiana’s government, and explained the removal of utility commissioner Andy Zay after a vote on an AES rate increase. He emphasized a focus on ratepayer‑friendly policies and continued infrastructure funding.
