Indiana Governor warns of deadline for Chicago Bears stadium deal
Indiana Governor Mike Braun has indicated that the state is approaching a deadline for the Chicago Bears to finalize a deal to relocate to Hammond, Indiana. Braun stated that Indiana has assembled an excellent deal for a world-class stadium and encouraged the team to commit before the state shifts its resources to other opportunities.
The proposed Indiana stadium package involves a $2 billion commitment from the Bears and $1 billion in public funding. While Bears President and CEO Kevin Warren previously noted the team’s focus on a Hammond development, a finalized contract has not yet been signed.
Simultaneously, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker is working to keep the team in Illinois. Pritzker confirmed meetings between NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Bears officials, and Illinois lawmakers, aiming to have stadium legislation ready for the state’s veto session starting November 17. This follows a failed attempt to finance a stadium in Arlington Heights earlier this year.
Recent political shifts in Indiana may impact the relocation efforts. Indiana House Speaker Todd Huston, a Republican who was pivotal in passing the necessary stadium legislation, lost his reelection campaign. Analysts suggest his departure could represent a setback for the push to bring the team across the border.
