Indiana Medicaid to Cover GLP‑1 Obesity Drugs under Federal BALANCE Initiative
Governor Mike Braun directed the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration to join the federal BALANCE model, allowing Indiana Medicaid to cover GLP‑1 medications for obesity. Under the agreement the state will pay $85.16 of the $245 monthly cost per enrollee, with the balance funded by federal contributions and manufacturer discounts. Drug makers Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk will also provide free lifestyle‑support services. Officials say the move could help the roughly 1.9 million Hoosiers on Medicaid manage obesity—a condition affecting about 71% of adults in the state and costing an estimated $10.7 billion, or 2% of Indiana’s GDP, each year. The program aims to improve health outcomes, keep people in the workforce and reduce reliance on public assistance.
