Indiana Parole Board hears clemency plea for Jeffrey Weisheit
The Indiana Parole Board is conducting clemency hearings for Jeffrey Allen Weisheit, who is scheduled for execution by lethal injection on November 5. Weisheit was sentenced to death for the 2010 arson and murders of 5-year-old Caleb Lynch and 8-year-old Alyssa Lynch in Evansville.
Weisheit’s attorney, Joseph Perkovich, argues that his client suffers from severe mental illness and substantial brain damage that has not been fully considered by the courts. The defense is requesting a delay in the execution to allow for a brain scan and to monitor how Tennessee handles recent execution challenges. During the hearing, Weisheit expressed remorse but struggled to explain his actions and could not provide a specific reason why the board should recommend clemency.
Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita has previously stated that it is “long past time to carry out the sentence.” Following the hearings, the Parole Board will make a recommendation to Governor Mike Braun, who holds the final authority on whether to commute the death sentence.
