Indiana school superintendents plan staff cuts following property tax reforms
Public school superintendents in Indiana are planning staff reductions to manage financial challenges resulting from property tax reforms. According to a survey by the Indiana Coalition for Public Education, nearly all respondents anticipate negative financial impacts from Senate Enrolled Act 1.
Many districts are already cutting support and teaching staff to address budget shortfalls. The report indicates that schools would require one-time funding increases of 1% to 25% to maintain current service levels, alongside an average ongoing annual increase of 6%. Some districts have implemented unconventional cost-saving measures, such as replacing lawn mowing with prairie grass planting and removing televisions to reduce electricity usage.
