Indiana seeks state control over coal ash regulation

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a plan that would allow Indiana to take over the regulation of coal ash sites from the federal government. Indiana currently possesses more coal ash sites than any other state, with over 100 units located across the region.

Under the proposed arrangement, the state would manage the permitting process and ensure compliance with environmental rules, while the EPA would continue to establish the underlying environmental standards. Governor Mike Braun stated that state control would allow Indiana to have a greater influence over managing these sites to protect local water systems and energy landscapes.

EPA Administrator David Fotouhi noted that the proposal aims to provide Indiana with local decision-making authority without weakening existing safeguards for human health and the environment. The proposal is currently awaiting a 60-day public comment period, with a public hearing scheduled for November 12.
