Indiana utility rate proposals and IURC settlement news

Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) has proposed a base rate reduction for 2027 that could save Indiana customers approximately $59 million. If approved by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC), a residential customer using 1,000 kWh per month could see annual savings of roughly $100. The company also proposed a three-year freeze on all rates for Indiana residential customers, citing load growth and increased revenue from large customers such as data centers.

Separately, the IURC will pay a $625,000 settlement to former chair Andy Zay following a lawsuit regarding his dismissal. The settlement, which covers remaining salary and benefits through March 2030, will be funded through the IURC budget. Consumer advocacy group Citizens Action Coalition noted that because the IURC is funded by fees from utilities—which are typically recovered through ratepayer charges—the settlement effectively places the cost on utility customers.
