Indiana voter eligibility and identification requirements for 2026
As Indiana approaches the 2026 election cycle, officials have issued guidance regarding voter eligibility, registration deadlines, and identification requirements for both the primary and general elections.
To be eligible to vote, individuals must be U.S. citizens, residents of Indiana, and at least 18 years old by the General Election on November 3, 2026. Voters must also have lived in their precinct for at least 30 days prior to the election and must not be currently serving a prison sentence following a criminal conviction. The ACLU of Indiana noted that previously incarcerated individuals, transgender people, college students, people with disabilities, recently naturalized citizens, and unhoused individuals remain eligible to vote if they meet the standard requirements.
For in-person voting, residents must present a government-issued photo ID from the State of Indiana, the U.S. government, or a federally recognized Native American tribe. Acceptable forms include Indiana driver’s licenses, state ID cards, U.S. passports, or military IDs. Notably, student IDs from state colleges and universities are no longer accepted due to changes in state law. Voters without qualifying ID may cast a provisional ballot, provided they follow up with their county election board within 10 days after the election.
Key dates for the 2026 Primary Election include a registration deadline of April 6 and Election Day on May 5. For the General Election, registration closes on October 5, with Election Day occurring on November 3.
