Indianapolis Fire Department conducts 29 water rescues amid historic flooding
The Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) has conducted 29 water rescues within a 24-hour period as historic flooding impacts the Rocky Ripple and Ravenswood areas. Most rescues occurred on Friday, with high concentrations of activity reported along River Road, Knickerbocker, and Ravenswood.
On Thursday night, officials performed a preemptive evacuation of the Rocky Ripple area, reaching approximately 700 residents. While 60% of those residents evacuated independently, about 70 people are currently sheltering at Rocky Ripple Town Hall. Emergency responders have deployed multiple Water Rescue Task Forces and requested boat assistance from several neighboring fire departments and the Morgan County Water Task Force.
Authorities are currently managing challenges regarding pet sheltering in coordination with Indianapolis Animal Care and Control. As of midnight, dispatchers had handled 298 calls involving EMS, high water investigations, and fire investigations. No active structure fires or downed power lines have been reported thus far.
