Indianapolis school bus crash on I-465 leaves 14 injured
A multi-vehicle collision on I-465 in Indianapolis involving a school bus, an Indiana State Police truck, and a minivan has left 14 people injured. The incident occurred Tuesday morning near the U.S. 40/East Washington Street interchange as the vehicles were entering northbound I-465.
The Metropolitan School District of Warren Township bus was carrying 24 students from Creston Intermediate and Middle School and three adults at the time of the crash. Eight children were transported to local hospitals, including Indiana University Health Riley Hospital for Children and Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at Ascension St. Vincent. While seven children are stable, one remains in serious condition. Five adults, including two state troopers and three school personnel, were also hospitalized in stable condition.
Investigators determined that as the bus and a blue Honda minivan merged onto the interstate, the bus driver swerved to the right and struck the rear of the police truck. The impact caused the truck to hit a concrete median and the bus to tip onto its driver’s side. Authorities are currently searching for the driver of the minivan, which was involved in the sequence of events but did not appear to strike the bus directly.
