Indianapolis teacher sentenced to prison for encouraging classroom fights

Julious Johnican, a 25-year-old former elementary school teacher in Indianapolis, has been sentenced to two years in prison. The sentence follows his guilty plea to a level 6 felony for neglect of a dependent.

Johnican, who taught at George Washington Carver Montessori Indianapolis Public Schools School 87, was found to have orchestrated and encouraged classroom fights between young students. The incidents, which occurred between August and November 2023, involved Johnican filming and cheering on assaults, including an attack on a 7-year-old student with special needs.

The misconduct was discovered after a significant error during a parent-teacher conference, where Johnican accidentally played footage of the assault while attempting to show the parents a different video. Johnican resigned from his position before he could be terminated by the school district.
