Indianapolis Zoo loses AZA accreditation
The Indianapolis Zoo has lost its nationwide accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The zoo confirmed it was not approved during the latest accreditation cycle, which is widely considered the gold standard for zoo operations in the United States.
While the AZA does not disclose specific details regarding confidential accreditation hearings, the organization evaluates facilities based on standards including animal welfare, veterinary care, conservation, physical safety, and staffing. The loss of accreditation may prevent the zoo from participating in AZA-affiliated breeding programs.
The Indianapolis Zoo is currently partnering with the AZA through the ‘Pathways to Membership’ program to address identified organizational concerns and implement targeted improvements to regain its status.
