India's auto market to welcome new EV and luxury brands

India’s passenger‑vehicle market is set to attract several new automotive brands. JSW Group is developing an independent brand, JSW Motors, focused on new‑energy vehicles such as battery‑electric, hybrid and premium SUVs, with localisation plans in Maharashtra. Hyundai’s luxury marque Genesis is also eyeing entry, adding a premium option to the market. Other potential entrants include Stellantis‑backed Leapmotor and US startup Slate Auto, though their Indian plans remain less certain.

Hyundai Motor India announced a compact electric SUV, codenamed HE1i, slated to debut around the 2026 Diwali season and launch in 2027. Built on the E‑GMP platform and sharing technology with the global Inster EV, the model will target the mass‑market EV segment, competing directly with Tata’s Punch EV and Nexon EV. Features are expected to include a 42‑49 kWh battery, fast‑charging capability, and a suite of advanced driver‑assist and connectivity systems.
