India's Ayurveda sector expands amid rising global wellness demand
India is experiencing a significant expansion in its AYUSH sector, with Ayurveda transitioning toward the mainstream global health economy. Ahead of the 11th Ayurveda Day on September 23, 2026, themed ‘Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow,’ the nation is working to integrate traditional knowledge with modern research and international healthcare standards.
Economic data shows the Ayush market grew from USD 2.85 billion in 2014 to USD 43.4 billion in 2023, while exports rose from USD 1.09 billion to USD 2.16 billion in the same period. Domestic awareness is high, with a National Sample Survey Office report indicating awareness levels of 94.8% in rural areas and 96% in urban areas.
To capitalize on the growing global medical value travel market, India has introduced a dedicated Ayush Visa and is partnering with the India Tourism Development Corporation to develop wellness tourism circuits. Experts note that continued global growth will depend on scientific validation, standardized quality control, and robust institutional frameworks.
