India's Census 2027 Self‑Enumeration Phase Launches Across Multiple States

The first phase of the 2027 Census of India, covering the House Listing and Housing Census, has been completed in Himachal Pradesh after a month‑long digital survey that ended on July 15. Enumerators reached urban, rural and remote households despite difficult terrain, and the state highlighted successful use of a self‑enumeration portal that allowed citizens to register their household information online.

Self‑enumeration has now opened in Tripura and Tamil Nadu, with the online portal available to residents until July 31. Field enumeration will follow from August 1 to August 30, after which the Population Enumeration is scheduled for February 2027. By early July, 23 states and union territories, including Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Delhi and Punjab, had already concluded the house‑listing stage.

The census is being conducted using dedicated mobile applications, marking India's first fully digital census. Officials emphasised that all data remain confidential and will be used solely for statistical and development planning, influencing resource allocation, welfare policies and constituency delimitation.
