India's 'Cockroach Janta Party' Meme Movement Gains 22M Followers Amid Youth Unemployment Outcry

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) emerged in India after Supreme Court Justice Surya Kant’s remarks labeling unemployed youth and activists as “cockroaches” and “parasites.” Within days the insult was reclaimed as a satirical political brand, launching on May 16 with a five‑point manifesto. The movement’s Instagram account quickly amassed nearly 21.8 million followers, surpassing the online presence of several established parties, and spread through memes, AI‑generated cockroach avatars, and profile‑picture changes.

Psychologists and commentators say the surge reflects deep frustration among Indian Gen Z over high graduate unemployment, exam paper‑leak scandals, rising living costs and perceived political exclusion. Supporters have taken the campaign offline, organizing river‑clean‑up drives in Delhi, waste‑removal projects in Hyderabad and other civic activities. The movement has faced platform suspensions and petitions to the Supreme Court, while public figures such as comedian Vir Das and activist Anna Hazare have voiced support for the youth’s expression.

CJP illustrates how internet humor can become a conduit for political engagement, turning a derogatory comment into a nation‑wide youth‑led call for recognition and participation.
