India's coconut sector supports 30 million livelihoods

India is the global leader in coconut production, a sector that supports approximately 30 million people, including 10 million farmers. The industry is a vital driver of rural livelihoods and agricultural growth across the country.

Regional specialization defines the sector, with Kerala leading in cultivation area, Tamil Nadu leading in total production, and Andhra Pradesh leading in productivity. The industry is transitioning from traditional goods to high-value exports, such as virgin coconut oil, coconut milk, and activated carbon.

To support this growth, the Indian government, through the Coconut Development Board, has implemented various initiatives. During the 2025-26 period, cultivation increased by 2,175 hectares, and 1,672 hectares underwent rejuvenation. Additionally, the Union Budget 2026-27 introduced the Coconut Promotion Scheme to enhance sustainability, export capacity, and farmer incomes.
