Air India names Tewolde Gebremariam as new CEO and Managing Director

Air India announced that former Ethiopian Airlines chief Tewolde Gebremariam will replace Campbell Wilson as chief executive officer and managing director. The board selected Gebremariam after a global search, citing his record of expanding airline operations, tripling fleet size and growing revenue more than fourfold at Ethiopian Airlines.

Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran said the appointment marks the start of a high‑growth phase for the Tata‑owned carrier, which has completed an initial stabilisation and integration stage. The airline, which posted a $2.8 billion loss for FY 2025‑26 and is under investigation for a 2024 Boeing Dreamliner crash, aims to strengthen India’s position as a global aviation hub under Gebremariam’s leadership.

Gebremariam, who will lead Air India’s next expansion era, highlighted his commitment to operational excellence, safety and building world‑class hub and MRO capabilities, while the airline plans to work closely with civil aviation authorities to boost international connectivity.
