India's digital economy requires integrated power and data centre planning

India’s digital economy is facing a critical intersection between computing growth and power infrastructure requirements. Driven by artificial intelligence, cloud services, and digital payments, data-centre capacity in India has increased fourfold from approximately 375 MW in 2020 to an estimated 1,500 MW by 2025. Industry estimates suggest this capacity could reach 4 GW by 2030.

To support this expansion, the integration of physical systems—including substations, transmission lines, and renewable energy plants—is becoming essential. The availability of reliable, clean energy is now a primary factor in the investment case for data centres, influencing location selection and commissioning speed. As India’s electricity demand is expected to grow by an average of 6.4% annually between 2026 and 2030, the ability to scale power architecture alongside computing demand will be vital for economic competitiveness and the clean-energy transition.
