India's Digital Finance Sector Grows While Fraud Losses Surge

Digital lending platforms in India now allow borrowers to apply, receive, and repay loans entirely online, cutting processing times to minutes and eliminating the need for physical paperwork. Banks, non‑bank financial companies and fintech startups use APIs to verify credit scores and identity, enabling rapid disbursements for needs such as medical bills or tuition.

Government data show that digital payment frauds in India have totalled Rs 4,457.03 crore over eleven financial years (2015‑16 to 2025‑26), with 822,781 reported cases. The rise reflects both an expansion of digital‑payment usage and a change in reporting standards after the RBI’s revised Master Directions on Fraud Risk Management in July 2024. Internet banking accounted for the largest loss share (Rs 2,007.76 crore), while credit‑card fraud also grew sharply, reaching over Rs 812 crore in 2023‑24. These trends highlight the dual impact of digital finance: increased accessibility and speed alongside heightened fraud risk.
