India's Digital India strategy drives $200 bn export growth

Since the launch of the Digital India programme in July 2015, the country has expanded internet access from about 14 % to 57 % of the population, introduced the zero‑fee Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and invested heavily in ICT education. These measures have turned India into one of the world’s largest exporters of digital services, generating nearly $200 billion a year by 2021. The surge reflects three pillars – infrastructure, payments and talent – that together lowered transaction costs and connected Indian firms to global supply chains.

The digital overhaul also underpins a broader shift in governance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, now the longest‑serving elected leader in India’s history, has moved welfare delivery from bureaucratic channels to a direct‑beneficiary model using the Jan Dhan‑Aadhaar‑Mobile (JAM) trinity and Direct Benefit Transfer. This technology‑first approach is reshaping India’s global identity from a developing economy to a digital powerhouse.
