India's digital infrastructure drives massive fintech growth and UPI dominance

India's digital infrastructure has undergone a massive transformation, driven largely by the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and highly affordable mobile data. UPI has evolved from a small-scale system into the world's busiest real-time payments network, accounting for approximately 49% of global real-time transaction volumes. In the 2025-26 fiscal year, the network processed 241.6 billion transactions, valued at roughly $3.8 trillion.

This digital shift has fostered a robust private payments industry. Between January 2021 and 2026, payments companies raised approximately $5.8 billion through 371 equity funding rounds. Investment has been concentrated in consumer-facing payments (53% of funding) and business payments (38%), while the infrastructure and enablement layer received 9%.

Additionally, India's mobile data consumption is among the highest globally, with users averaging 32 GB per month at some of the world's lowest costs. The UPI ecosystem is also expanding internationally, with live acceptance in countries such as the UAE, Singapore, France, Mauritius, Bhutan, and Nepal.
