India's DMRL Transfers Advanced Naval Steel Tech to SAIL

The Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has transferred three advanced materials technologies to the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). The transfer includes manufacturing processes for DMR‑249A and DMR‑249BK grade steel billets, which are critical for building naval ships and submarines, and the technology for DMR‑249B steel plates (8‑30 mm thick) to SAIL’s Alloy Steel Plants in Durgapur and Rourkela.

These steps aim to boost India's indigenous defence‑metallurgy capability, lower reliance on imports and support the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Producing high‑strength, corrosion‑resistant steel domestically is expected to strengthen the nation's maritime platforms and overall defence preparedness.
