India's economic strength to sustain global leadership

U.S. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has stated that India’s economic growth and size will sustain its position as a global leader. Speaking during the BRICS summit in New Delhi, Krishnamoorthi expressed concern that American foreign and economic policies are causing a drift among traditional allies and partners.

He suggested that previous trade and economic policies have encouraged nations such as India, Brazil, and Egypt to engage more closely with Russia, China, and Iran. Krishnamoorthi characterized the current state of U.S. leadership on issues like climate change and global trade stability as being ‘AWOL.’

While not describing a permanent fundamental realignment of the global order, he noted a trend where partners in Europe, Asia, and Canada are looking elsewhere for leadership. Cornell University scholar Allen Carlson added that India’s rising international profile over the last two decades is partly due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertive foreign policy approach.
