India's egg prices hit record highs in Namakkal and Hyderabad

Farmgate egg prices in the Tamil Nadu hub of Namakkal rose to a record Rs 6.70 per egg, while retail prices in the region and in Hyderabad have climbed to Rs 8‑9 each. The National Egg Coordination Committee set the new farmgate rate after noting a supply‑demand mismatch.

Industry officials attribute the surge to multiple factors: soaring feed costs (soybean prices jumped from about Rs 35 to Rs 68 per kg and maize from Rs 20 to Rs 28), higher diesel and transport expenses, and a summer‑related drop in production as heat stress reduced output from roughly six crore to five crore eggs daily. Viral infections have forced some farms to cull birds, further tightening supply. Exports have also fallen sharply, from around 75‑100 lakh eggs a day to about 10 lakh.

Poultry farmers warn that the price rise could continue if production does not recover, with farmgate prices potentially crossing Rs 7 and retail rates staying above Rs 8‑9 for the foreseeable future.
