India's EPF interest credited annually despite monthly calculations
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) calculates interest on each employee's EPF balance every month using an 8.25% annual rate for the 2025‑26 financial year. Although the calculation is performed monthly, the accrued interest is not deposited into the account each month.
Instead, the total interest earned over the entire financial year is credited to the EPF account in a single lump‑sum at year‑end. Because contributions from both employee and employer are added each month, the balance on which interest is calculated increases throughout the year, creating a compounding effect that can substantially grow retirement savings. Workers are advised to review their EPF passbooks regularly and verify that employers make timely contributions.
