India's EPFO Announces Rs 7 Lakh Life Cover and Warns of Record Errors Ahead of Instant PF Rollout

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has highlighted that members of the Employees' Deposit‑Linked Insurance (EDLI) scheme are entitled to a government‑provided life‑insurance benefit ranging from ₹2.5 lakh to a maximum of ₹7 lakh. Coverage is automatic for salaried workers, incurs no premium for employees, and is funded by a 0.5 % employer contribution. It also applies to deaths occurring abroad, and nominees are urged to keep their e‑nomination details up to date.

At the same time, EPFO is preparing the EPFO 3.0 digital platform, which will allow instant provident‑fund withdrawals via UPI. An analysis of more than 9,100 EPF cases found that 52 % contain record discrepancies—such as Aadhaar mismatches, duplicate Universal Account Numbers, incomplete PF transfers and missing employer KYC—that could delay or block these withdrawals. The report stresses that accurate underlying records remain essential for members to benefit from the new instant‑withdrawal service.
