India's EPFO clarifies EPS eligibility and EPF interest credit timing

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has confirmed that employees whose monthly wages exceeded ₹15,000 when they joined their first job are not eligible for the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS). Such workers can still contribute to the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) and may voluntarily join the PF under Paragraph 26(6) if both employee and employer agree, provided the application is submitted within six months of joining.

EPFO also explained that interest on EPF accounts is not credited in real time. Interest is calculated and posted only after the financial year closes and a reconciliation process across regional offices is completed. This administrative window can take several weeks to a few months, which is normal and does not indicate any problem with the member’s account. Members are advised to monitor their passbooks and raise complaints only if contributions themselves are missing or incorrect.
