India's EPFO to enable PF withdrawals via UPI and ATM under EPFO 3.0
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has completed testing for its EPFO 3.0 digital upgrade, which will let members withdraw provident‑fund balances through Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platforms and dedicated EPFO ATM cards. The rollout, announced by Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, has no firm launch date yet, but aims to replace the current online‑application process with near‑instant, paper‑less transfers to Aadhaar‑linked bank accounts.
In parallel, the auto‑settlement ceiling for advance claims has been increased five‑fold, from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh, allowing many requests for illness, education, marriage or housing to be settled automatically within 72 hours for KYC‑compliant accounts. Eligible members will be able to withdraw between 50 % and 75 % of their EPF balance while retaining a minimum 25 % as retirement security. The changes target over 30 crore Indian workers, promising faster access to savings and greater financial inclusion.
The digital enhancements also include face authentication via the UMANG app, instant UAN activation, digital passbooks and Aadhaar‑linked record corrections, marking a comprehensive move toward a fully online EPF ecosystem.
