India's ethanol-blending policy sparks political and environmental debate

India's ethanol-blending policy, specifically the transition to E20 petrol, has sparked political debate and environmental concerns. AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal questioned the policy, suggesting it could impact the economy due to a perceived decline in consumer interest in petrol-powered vehicles as buyers shift toward CNG and electric vehicles.

In defense of the program, BJP MP Janardan Mishra highlighted India's heavy reliance on imported crude oil, noting that the country imports roughly 80% of its needs. Mishra cited Brazil as a successful model where vehicles run on high ethanol concentrations without issue, arguing that the policy is essential for national energy security amidst global geopolitical instability.

However, the push for ethanol raises significant sustainability questions regarding water usage. Producing ethanol from sugarcane requires approximately 3,000 liters of water for every liter of ethanol produced. In states like Karnataka, which is a major sugarcane producer, this high water footprint coincides with alarming groundwater depletion, where several districts are already classified as over-exploited or critical.
